Ten tips for Cross-Cultural Communication within the NHS

Working in an organisation as large, complex and diverse as the NHS Cross-Cultural Communication can sometimes be difficult. Whether it is working with people form different parts of the world or trying to communicate with service users and patients with weak English, there will always be misunderstandings and confusion. So next time have a think about your interactions with people from diverse backgrounds and note the following top ten tips to help you:

Speak slowly
One question at a time
Avoid Negative questions
Take turns and really listen
Write it down if you are unsure whether something has been understood
Provide support. Cross-cultural communication is most effective when people are comfortable with each other
Always check meanings, never assume the other person has understood you
Always verify what has been said by summarising it. Always practice active listening.
Avoid slang. Even the most well-educated person from another background will not have complete knowledge of slang, idioms and sayings. The danger is that while words will be understood, meaning might be missed.
Watch the humour. Humour doesn’t always transfer across cultures

And finally… Different cultures have diverse etiquettes when communicating. If it is possible always try to undertake some cultural awareness training or even do some research on the target culture. Dealing with people from other cultures will provide great depth and richness to communications. Make sure you get the most out of them as well by using the above tips as a starting point.
